Meet Ilja, SHEQ Manager for STC in Europe

Ilja Siebert, who’s been our SHEQ Manager Europe since 2014, is responsible for safety, quality and sustainability across Stolt Tank Containers’ European sites. Working primarily from our Rotterdam location, he enjoys being part of a small, globally-connected team that’s instrumental in ensuring safe supply chain management.

“As SHEQ Manager, I need to ensure we have the correct procedures in place for delivering whatever has been agreed with our customers, including appropriate safety measures around food and hazardous products. I am also responsible for quickly fixing things if they do go wrong, or are not as planned. Finding safe and sustainable solutions that keep our customers happy is one of the things I really enjoy.

“I love that I get to coordinate communications between people at different levels in our organisation and the various stakeholders. To me, quality management isn’t some kind of ‘necessary evil’, but a positive role in keeping customers and governments satisfied. Whether I’m talking to cleaners or repair people at our depots, operators in our offices or members of our management team, I get a buzz out of being able to identify and optimise internal processes so problems are eliminated.”

Experienced and dedicated

Ilja’s career in SHEQ is backed up with a BSc in Chemical Engineering & Environmental Technology and a MSc in Technology & Innovation Management. Having begun working life as an Environmental & CSR Manager in the electronics industry, he moved on to become a Lead Auditor/Trainer for a certification body, then an Interim SHEQ Management & Group Audit Manager in the waste management industry, before joining the logistics industry with Stolt Tank Containers in 2014. Our organisation benefits greatly from his wide range of expertise and experience.
We also very much appreciate Ilja’s personal dedication to health and safety.  “Being a father of three and living in a small village, I know how important it is to create a safe and sustainable environment for the people I love and like to work with.”

Looking after fellow employees

Not content with just ensuring safety and quality as his day-job, Ilja is actively involved in Stolt-Nielsen’s’ aim to treat all its employees fairly while striving to maximise employee and environmental safety. “I’m Vice-Chairman of the SNL JointWorksCouncil, where we represent the concerns and interests of SNL employees in the Netherlands in matters ranging from occupational health issues and fair financial treatment through to safe Return to Office planning in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
